This Peony Cannot Grow in Shanglin Garden

Right before I started using this more, spookykingdomstarlight and I made an interactive fiction website for Lost You Forever (CDrama), which is already pretty small on the english side, but smaller yet for Xiao Yao/ Xiang Liu pairings.

It was made for the 'Silence' week of the Hanahaki for Hanami event, and is such an incredible story. You should, if nothing else read it and go tell Spooky how cool she is <3

I did the site design to accompany the story and had a little leftover 'process' stuff to dump, which I thought might be of interest to some folks out there.

Please Note: I am not formally educated in any kind of code. Everything I know is from kind strangers on the internet, coworkers, and Ye Olde Fucking Around. Don't assume I am here for efficiency or state of the art languages- I just like to make stuff that is fun and looks cool.

I'm not gonna go over everything, this is just a random dump of thoughts/pics. Spooky approached me first to ask if I could make something that like had the story fade-in/out at the edges (you will see this did not end up in the final, because what I could make that was not insanely labor intensive for a story of this length, did not end up flowing very well) to sort of emulate the ephemeral experience/fading theme to the story, I said I could!

My approach for this was something like this:

-Create item, in this instance <box></box>. Each certain number of sentences will go into each.
-set class .focus for when something will be visible, set fade-in animation in css for Nice Transition
-set javascript to take a look at when the window height above and below the current item is at a certain point (essentially when that portion of the text is in the center of the screen) and apply .focus class. Remove it when this is not the case.

This proved to be pretty using sample text, but ineffective when we realized that actual text is variable and was hard to cut into the same size patterns. I'll definitely keep the solution in the Storage Bin for use next time the perfect opportunity comes around, like a code raccoon.

Now, we COULD have <box></box> around every single sentence and changed the parameters when how many items could get focus class, or made a secondary function for a slower fade out for surrounding sentences (I realize this can be hard to visualize right now but just trust me, it could be Very Fancy), but this would be a stupid amount of labor.

So we ended up nixxing that particular element, which is fine because there was a lot going on otherwise.

(If you have a different solution to this task, btw, i would be curious how you'd solve it- CSS/HTML/JS/JQUERY solutions only please.)

Anyways, moving on, here's the working color palette we went with. Really wanted to play with those blush pink robes Xiang Liu wears as FangFeng Bei in canon:

Only other real features of note were the cursor animation, which used a DrawOver event, and the scattering peony petals. I borrowed some math for that, and played around using this really nifty SVG path editor on Github to make a vague peony petal shape.

Robot Post

I've always loved robots and mechanical design (built so many of those AMT series model cars... often without reading the manual and therefore incorrectly but still) but hate math (also ironically sad considering my love for video game and web development), so it's been something of a backburner skill to get better at drawing them. so many parts! hard to just wing the vibes!

Which is why, when I saw this post on Cara, I was stoked for an opportunity to finally try. I'm not doing these on any particular schedule, just when the free time and inspiration strikes- but I'll update this post with links as I try to complete it.

I feel like I'm adapting quite nicely to DW interface, just have to poke all the buttons a few times. Grateful for the edit button XD.
